Welcome to Chat.co! In this guide, you'll create your first AI knowledge agent from scratch. By the end, you'll have a working chatbot that can answer questions based on your own content—complete with citations.
What you'll build
A fully functional AI chatbot that can answer questions about your documents, provide accurate citations, and be embedded on any website.
1. Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- A Chat.co account — Sign up at chat.co/waitlist if you haven't already
- A document to upload — PDF, Word doc, or text file (we'll use this to train your bot)
- 5-10 minutes — That's all it takes to get your first bot running
Tip: For your first bot, use a short document (1-10 pages) like a FAQ page, product guide, or company overview. You can always add more content later.
2. Create Your Chatbot
Let's create your first AI knowledge agent:
- Navigate to Dashboard
After logging in, you'll land on your dashboard. Click the
+ Create Chatbotbutton in the top right corner. - Name Your Bot
Give your chatbot a descriptive name like "Product Support Bot" or "Company FAQ Assistant". This helps you identify it later.
- Choose Your AI Model
Select the AI model for your chatbot. We recommend starting with Claude 3.5 Sonnet for the best balance of speed and accuracy.
- Click Create
That's it! Your chatbot is now created and ready to be trained.
3. Upload a Document
Now let's give your chatbot some knowledge to work with. Chat.co supports multiple file types and data sources.

- Go to Sources
In your chatbot dashboard, click
Sourcesin the sidebar navigation. - Click Add Source
Choose
Upload Filesto add documents, orCrawl Websiteto import content from a URL. - Select Your File
Drag and drop your file or click to browse. The system will automatically process and index the content.
- Wait for Processing
Processing typically takes 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on file size. You'll see a green checkmark when complete.
Important: Make sure your document contains clear, well-structured content. The AI works best with organized information that includes headers and paragraphs.
4. Customize Appearance
Make your chatbot match your brand. Chat.co offers extensive customization options.

Customize the greeting users see when they first open the chat.
Suggested Questions
Add suggested prompts to help users get started quickly.
Navigate to Appearance in the sidebar to access all customization options.
5. Test in Preview Mode
Before deploying, test your chatbot to ensure it's working correctly.
- Open Preview
Click the
Test Botbutton in the top navigation bar. - Ask Questions
Try asking questions related to the content you uploaded. For example, if you uploaded a product FAQ, ask "What is your return policy?"
- Check Citations
Verify that responses include citations pointing to the source documents. This builds trust with your users.
- Test Edge Cases
Ask questions outside your content to see how the bot handles unknown topics. It should gracefully indicate when it doesn't have information.
Pro Tip: Keep a list of common questions your customers ask. Test each one to ensure your bot provides accurate, helpful responses.
6. Deploy with Embed Code
Your chatbot is ready! Let's get it live on your website.
Get Your Embed Code
- Go to Deployment
Click
Deploymentin the sidebar navigation. - Choose Widget Type
Select between a floating bubble widget or an inline iframe embed.
- Copy the Code
Click the copy button to grab the embed snippet.
Add to Your Website
Paste the embed code just before the closing </body> tag on your website:

That's it! Your chatbot will now appear on your website as a floating widget in the bottom right corner.
